Product Overview

Dual-stage RO system for pharmaceutical-grade purified water production

The PW Series Pharmaceutical Purified Water Treatment System is designed for pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and healthcare facilities requiring USP/EP/ChP-grade purified water. The system uses a double-stage (dual-pass) reverse osmosis process to achieve water quality exceeding pharmacopeia standards.

The complete treatment process includes multi-media filtration, activated carbon adsorption, water softening, cartridge filtration (5 μm), and dual-pass reverse osmosis. The final product water passes through ozone sterilization and 0.22 μm sterilizing filtration before reaching the point of use. UV treatment (254 nm) provides additional bioburden reduction when ozone is not in use.

All pre-treatment stages utilize Fleck automatic control heads (USA) enabling automatic backwashing, forward flushing, and regeneration. The system features self-diagnostic capabilities and automatic protection against low pressure, overpressure, dry run, and other fault conditions. Wetted materials are 316L stainless steel and food-grade PVC-U, fully cGMP compliant.

  • Meets USP, EP, and ChP purified water standards
  • Conductivity below 1.1 μS/cm (at 25°C)
  • 75%+ overall water recovery rate
  • IQ/OQ validation documentation included

How It Works

10-stage treatment process with detailed equipment functions

1

Raw Water Intake & Tank

The automatic inlet valve opens based on the liquid level signal from the raw water tank. Low/Medium/High level controls manage solenoid valves for safe operation. A manual bypass valve provides emergency backup if the automatic valve fails.

2

Multi-Media Filtration

A quartz sand filter removes particles larger than 20 μm including silt, rust, colloids, and suspended solids. This protects downstream equipment and extends the service life of subsequent treatment stages. Automatic backwash is triggered by the Fleck control head.

3

Activated Carbon Adsorption

The activated carbon filter removes pigments, odors, organic matter, residual chlorine (free chlorine <0.1 ppm to protect RO membranes), and pesticide contamination. This critical step protects RO membranes from chlorine damage and improves product water taste and odor.

4

Water Softening

The softening filter reduces water hardness by removing calcium and magnesium ions (scale-forming) through ion exchange with food-grade resin. Intelligent resin regeneration (Fleck automatic control head) ensures continuous softening capability with minimal maintenance.

5

Precision Filtration (5 μm)

A 5 μm cartridge filter captures damaged filter media and fine particles that passed through pre-treatment. This protects RO membranes from fouling and ensures required inlet water quality. Replaceable cartridge design for easy maintenance.

6

First-Stage Reverse Osmosis

Hyde Energy spiral-wound RO membranes treat raw water at 0.8-1.2 MPa operating pressure. Each membrane housing includes a sampling valve for monitoring individual membrane conductivity and performance. First-stage recovery: 50-75% depending on feed water quality.

7

pH Adjustment & Second-Stage RO

First-stage RO product water enters the pure water tank where food-grade sodium hydroxide (NaOH) adjusts pH to optimal level. The second-stage RO system further polishes water to conductivity below 1.1 μS/cm. Second-stage concentrate is recycled to the raw water tank.

8

Ozone Sterilization

Ozone (O₃) sterilization provides broad-spectrum biocidal activity against bacteria, spores, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. Ozone leaves no chemical residue and decomposes to oxygen naturally. The dissolved ozone residual maintains microbiological control throughout the distribution loop.

9

Final Filtration & UV Treatment

A 0.22 μm sterilizing filter (PVDF membrane, hydrophilic) removes dead bacteria, endotoxin fragments, and particles. The 254 nm UV sterilizer provides additional bioburden reduction. Note: UV must be OFF when using ozone - UV converts ozone to oxygen, reducing effectiveness.

10

Delivery to Use Points

Purified water is delivered through a sanitary 316L stainless steel distribution loop to multiple use points. Continuous circulation maintains water quality. Periodic sanitization cycles (hot water at 80°C or chemical) prevent biofilm formation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What water quality does the system produce?

A: The system produces pharmacopeia-grade purified water meeting USP, EP, and ChP (Chinese Pharmacopeia) standards. Dual-stage RO ensures consistent quality with conductivity typically below 1.1 μS/cm at 25°C.

Q: How often do RO membranes need cleaning?

A: When operating pressure reaches 1.2 MPa (vs. 0.8 MPa for new membranes), chemical cleaning is required. Under normal operating conditions, this typically occurs every 6-12 months depending on feed water quality.

Q: How does temperature affect production capacity?

A: For every 1°C drop in water temperature below 25°C, production flow decreases by approximately 2.1%. The system is rated at 500 L/h at 25°C baseline temperature.

Q: Can I use UV and ozone sterilization together?

A: No. UV light converts ozone to oxygen, reducing ozone's sterilization effectiveness. Use either UV or ozone treatment at any given time, not both simultaneously.

Q: What is the water recovery rate?

A: The first-stage RO recovery is 50-75%, and the second-stage recovery is 85-90%. Second-stage concentrate is recycled to the raw water tank, achieving overall system recovery of 75% or higher.
